Writing comes naturally to some and others need to really focus to write well. Personally, I find myself to be the second one and I have found some interesting patterns over the last few months as I write more and more for several blogs. I enjoy having another creative outlet and most of my writing tends to be about design, print and working as an independent designer. Writing definitely has helped me grow as a designer and business owner.
It has been interesting to find that my best writing comes early in the morning. Before I start really getting into my day. There are a few reasons I think this works so well for me. First of which is the fact that my brain is much quieter. I haven’t gotten into what I need to do for the day and I haven’t started analyzing project and trying to think of solutions. My thoughts can stay focused on what I want to write about and not what I need to do later. My concentration is much better. Another reason early morning writing works for me has to do with outside distractions as well. The house is quiet, the phone isn’t ringing yet and there is still a bit of peace. While I know I can lock myself in a room or shut off the phone, it’s nice not having to take those extra steps.
Write now as I write this I am using Google Docs. There are many good writing programs out there and some even go as far as to lock out anything else on your computer that might be a distraction. I have thought about giving one of these a try, as sometimes the browser button or the email button can be a bit attractive. I like Google Docs because it is free, accessible from any computer with a browser and can handle any of the formatting I wish to do. It is also very plain, without a lot of distracting buttons, bells or whistles. The auto save function is nice because the last thing you want is to lose something you have spent time writing. I for one, hate that because reproducing the original thoughts can be difficult.
I write at my desk, where I do all my design work as well. Having it be a structured place rather than on the sofa with my laptop, helps me concentrate and stay on track. It keeps my hands well placed and comfortable so I can write for a good amount of time. My posture stays good and I have a bigger screen so reading what I have written is much easier. Staying in a structured environment helps me be much more productive with my writing.
This is something that I want to change about my writing. I am a firm believer in the philosophy that the more you write the better you get at it. Right now I write a few hours a week, spread out over a couple of days. Typically I write on Saturday and/or Sunday morning; maybe another morning during the week. My goal is to try to write at least something every day. Even if it’s not something I publish. I have heard some suggest writing an hour a day and I would love to reach that goal but like anything I plan to chip away at it. Getting into the routine is key for me.
So those are a couple of things about how I handle writing. I am curious how others handle their writing. When do you write? How often? Let me know in the comments. I look forward to hearing from you guys!
