Jake and Carl talk about how it is to be a designer who sometimes is merely a tool for a client. This doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing but it is something a lot of designers struggle to deal with. As creatives we take a lot of pride in the creative work we do and it's important not to let those feeling get in the way of the relationships with clients. However, sometimes a client isn't the best fit and you have to be willing to address that. At the same time, sometimes you just have to be a tool for your client. During the latest episode of Rookie Designer Podcast, Carl and Jake talk about dealing with areas of design and business they aren't good at or knowledgable about. Carl shares a specific story about how he had to make a decision on how to deal with a client asking about a specific area of web design he isn't used to working in. Jake makes some suggestions on how to deal with "Knowing what you don't know." They also get into some of the things they are enjoying right now outside of their design projects.

We apologize for the lack of video this time around. We are still working to find the best way to deal with video casting and found that Blab had some major hiccups for us this time around. There is a plan in place to find a different avenue next time we try to record. Hopefully it will be more successful and will allow us to share video as well as audio. We appreciate your patience as we work our way through this new area (guess this qualifies as a don't know...).

A book by Rachel Andrew and Kevin Yank from Sitepoint

I felt that this book had some great lessons to offer in the way of moving from a table-based workflow to CSS. The topics were covered well, and explained in enough detail for most to follow. The only problem I have with the book is the title. It lead me to believe that there is some new revelation in the book about how CSS code should be written, thus targeting avid users of the technology. After reading the book, I felt it was more a guide designed for those users who are NOT yet familiar with the ways of CSS. I would recommend this publication for those looking to get into the game of CSS coding as opposed to a completely table-based workflow.

Deadlines are something that we all must deal with and that's not going to change anytime soon! They can be good though, for prioritization, motivation, and just plain getting stuff done. There is a conversation that should take place before the setting of these deadlines though, that can result in a smoother course of action, because let's face it, when deadlines don't get met problems and hard feeling are many times to follow. I have a personal example of a deadline that went wrong, and how i think this sort of thing can be remedied, including how to deal with the people involved so there are (hopefully) no hard feelings between you and the people you must continuously work with.

What is Quality training? I got a dose of it recently at my full time job, and it wasn't half bad. Basically its a set of rules or guidelines that help facilitate a productive work environment. There are several things you probably do on a daily basis that are not exactly necessary, or perhaps could be done in a more efficient way to improve your workflow, and as a result, make you more productive. It also sets the stage for working and communicating with others in a way that benefits each party and the end result of your work.

When going for an interview we most times focus squarely on the skills we have and promoting those to no end. What we must remember though is that there is much more that goes into the selection of a candidate for a job. Companies are also very focused on your personal traits and how you will get along with the rest of the team or people you will be working closely with. This many times is just as important as how well you can use photoshop or dreamweaver, because it can spell the success or failure of a new employee.

There is a point at which its a good idea to turn the computer off and live a little. Failing to do so could end up with you getting burned out on the things you do to further your career.
